Poem Just Accepted for Summer 2013 Issue of Persimmon Tree

I’m delighted to announce that one of the poems I wrote at Peter Murphy’s annual Poetry and Prose Getaway this past January, “After and Because”, has just today been accepted for the Summer 2013 issue of Persimmon Tree, a very well respected journal of writing by women over 60.

They do not ordinarily accept poetry submissions. However, two times a year they hold contests and publish the winning poems submitted by poets who live in a specific geographical region.

I submitted in response to a call for poets living in ten Northeast states (ME, VT, NH, CT, MA, RI, NY, PA, NJ, DE), so the contest was very competitive. I’m thrilled!! I will be sure to let you know when the issue is up and running.

My Haibun “Carolina Home” published in Notes From the Gean

I am especially happy that One Bowl is getting reviewed because it is an e-chapbook, and I feared that e-books might not get reviewed. This evening when I opened my email from Jeffrey Woodward this evening, I found a lovely and deeply moving review of my recent e-chapbook of haibun, One Bowl, in the March 2013 issue (just posted) of Haibun Today. I am grateful to Graham Nunn for his kind words about my work. He lives in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, and I’m sorry I didn’t get to meet him during my visit with Australian haiku poets in Melbourne last December. Poem Accepted for Holy Cow! Press anthology

Just got the news today via good old postal mail that Holy Cow! Press has accepted my poem “Shelling Peas” for their forthcoming anthology The Heart of All That Is: Reflections on Home, to be published in a paperback edition during October 2013. Since it had been some months since I submitted, I was checking my submissions records and wondering about it earlier today—and then the mail came .

The press does lovely anthologies. In 2009, I was blessed to have work in an earlier anthology of theirs Beloved on the Earth: 150 Poems of Grief and Gratitude— a collection which I highly recommend for anyone dealing with the loss of a loved one. I’m so pleased to be included in this new anthology from Holy Cow! Press!

And I want to add that Jama Rattigan at her “Jama Rattigan’s Alphabet Soup” blog was the first to like and feature this poem. You can scroll down to read it again at:

Back from Australia, plus two new publications

I just got back night before last from a month’s visit in Australia I stayed with friends in Victoria (a small town near Melbourne) and then went on vacation with them in both Victoria and New South Wales, visiting Sydney, the Blue Mountains, and Canberra.

While there, I also led a ginko in the Melbourne Botanical Gardens and visited with various haiku poets in Sydney and elsewhere. Special thanks to Cynthia and Bruce Rowe for the tour of Sydney. What a beautiful landscape! Will share more on all that later—after I recover from jet-lag and organize my many photos.

Another Poem Posted This Morning

I’m blessed to have another poem of mine appearing on-line. This morning, Jama Rattigan is featuring a poem of mine, “Your Grandmother’s Whisk”. I wrote it last February in response to a wonderful writing prompt by my poet friend Diane Lockward—asking us to write about a tool we used. It’s wonderful how objects carry memories for us, some things passing from generation to generation. After I wrote the poem and its accompanying memories of Bill and his grandmother, I made blueberry pancakes.

Here’s a link to the poem page. I’m glad that Jama chose to post it during October, the anniversary month of Bill’s death. I know he’s enjoying his grandmother’s blueberry pancakes and oatmeal cookies again. And I hope you enjoy the poem.
